Port
Chester Council for the Arts (PCCFA) is a not-for-profit arts
organization based in Port Chester, New York. Since 1981, the PCCFA
has been a pioneer in developing and providing high quality arts programs
that encourage cooperation among all segments of the community through a variety
of shared artistic experiences for children and adults alike.
On April 16, 2008, the
PCCFA launched NATIONAL ARTS IN THE SCHOOL DAY to raise awareness of
the vital role the arts play in a child's education. PCCFA piloted
this program with the goal of giving children in grades K-12 nationwide the
opportunity to experience and be inspired by all kinds of creative arts in
school.
NATIONAL ARTS IN
THE SCHOOL DAY is modeled on the PCCFA's successful 10-year-old Literacy Through
the Arts program, in which professional artists teach students in grades K-5
such varied subjects as sign language, theatre, dance, music, painting and
crafts, all integrated within the New York State standards for literacy in
each grade.
About NATIONAL ARTS IN
THE SCHOOL DAY, some people have asked, "Why just one day? What about
the rest of the school year?" Read how NATIONAL ARTS IN
THE SCHOOL DAY opens the door to arts in the school every day: A One-Day Door Opener
The Literacy Through the
Arts program fulfills President Obama's call for a renewed commitment to
arts education, and offers a model for a national community-based Artists
Corp. To read about the PCCFA's Literacy Through the Arts program and
